Learn English
Any immigrant who lives with you must be treated as if they were one of your citizens. You must love them as yourself, because you were immigrants in the land of Egypt; I am the LORD your God. ~~ Leviticus 19:34 (CEB version)
We are called to love and to care for the immigrant. Scripture often describes God’s heart and compassion for the weak, the lowly, the marginalized and the outcast. He desires that His people love others—especially the most vulnerable in our community.
ESL volunteers at SJCAC reach our neighbors to make a difference in the lives of immigrants. They help immigrants acquire fluency in the English language, both written and oral. Teaching an immigrant to speak English gives opportunity for him/her to access the wider community and the benefits that are found there. With English proficiency, the ESL student can access higher paying jobs and even higher education which brightens their hopes for their future in the US. Not only do ESL teachers help bridge the language barrier between our students and the wider community, they also become cultural mentors to their students as they help them to understand and traverse cultural differences in their new home.
The ESL curriculum includes games, songs and learning activities that often fill the classroom with laughter. Our students enter our classroom isolated and friendless, far away from family and all that is familiar. They leave our classrooms with a new community and many friends. While learning English, students build new relationships. It is in this pleasant and welcoming community that the Good News of Jesus Christ is shared.
