Youth News: Jan. 23, 2020
Thursday July 2nd, 2020Dear Youth & Family,
I love our TWA passage in the New Testament referring to What Makes People “Unclean”. What would you say makes us unclean? Not taking a shower or not washing your hands before you eat?. There are numerous ideas of how to stay unclean.
In this passage (Matthew 15:1-20), we read how the Pharisees are upset in how Jesus’ disciples do not wash their hands before they eat. Jesus responds in pointing out their own lacking in how they fail to follow what they teach. Jesus states, “What goes into someone’s mouth does not make them ‘unclean.’ It’s what comes out of their mouth that makes them ‘unclean.” Jesus is clearly upset at the Pharisees and the Pharisees were angry with Jesus’ response. However, Peter is having a hard time understanding this and asks Jesus to elaborate. In Matthew 15:15-20 we read this from Jesus…
16 “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see? Everything that enters the mouth goes into the stomach. Then it goes out of the body. 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart. Those are the things that make someone ‘unclean.’ 19 Evil thoughts come out of a person’s heart. So do murder, adultery, and other sexual sins. And so do stealing, false witness, and telling lies about others. 20 Those are the things that make you ‘unclean.’ But eating without washing your hands does not make you ‘unclean.’ ” (Matthew 15:16-20 NIRV)
Yikes, Jesus is letting us know clearly of the filth that lies in man’s heart. Ask yourself, what is in my heart today? Do my words edify others or do they put others down? More importantly, should I allow evil thoughts to come out of my mouth?
Take time to ask Abba in person about what needs to be laid down. Whether it is frustrations with family members, friends, or those who come into your life weekly, choose to forgive and to ask God to cleanse you from the inside out. There is no need to point fingers at issues we see in others when we ourselves have issues.
Blessings,
Sam
