True Identity
Pastor Douglas Thieu
Do you identify yourself as an engineer? A straight “A” student? Or perhaps a homemaker who is an excellent cook? Maybe the eldest sister? Or the most favored son? Or do you pride yourself for being a citizen of the United States of America?
Oftentimes as believers we forget our true identity in Christ…that we are a new creation, the old has passed away and we have become new in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17). We forget what God has done for us, the great love that He has lavished upon us, calling us children of God (I John 3:1).
That’s right, you and I are daughters and sons of the Most High God, the Maker of heaven and earth, the One who calls us and knows us each by name. But for many of us, we still live as slaves…slaves to sin, slaves to our old selves and habits, slaves to our mobile phone, slaves to our work, and even slaves to our children.
Galatians 4:7 says “So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.” Because of Jesus’ work on the cross, God has taken us out of darkness into the light, out of the slavery of sin into a new found freedom in Him. Not only are we God’s children but also His heirs to His blessings and an eternal inheritance. Let’s stop living as slaves and start living as children of God, fully accessing the promises and richness of our Abba.
Reflections:
- What do you identify yourself as?
- What are you a slave to?
- How can you live out on a daily basis your true identity in Christ, as God’s daughter or son?
