“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
– Luke 4:18-19
As I reflect on the systemic oppression and racism that our black brothers and sisters face in America, I am reminded of the prophetic words that proclaimed who Jesus came down from heaven to earth for. Jesus came for the oppressed, he came for those who had no voice in society. He came to reestablish the corrupt order that the religious leaders had built. In taking example after Jesus, we are called to stand up to the injustice and oppression that affect not only our black brothers and sisters but also other minority communities. It’s not easy, and Jesus’s life shows us that standing up for the oppressed can lead to hatred and persecution, but it’s not a decision we make, it’s what we’re called to do.
