, when we invited a couple from the Literature International Crusade (LIC) to train us how to teach English as Second Language using Bible material. It started because the Senior Center had a couple of banners out on the church fence that advertised its activities, among which was mentioned ”„English Classes”¦. And people who weren”¦t seniors were coming off the streets inquiring about learning English. We became conscious that there was a great need in the community for this service.
Although learning a language is hard, they really try, and we can offer some assistance. They trust us for not only language learning, but also for other personal help, and most of all for spiritual guidance (even though many of them are not believers). This makes us feel rewarded and satisfied.
Building relationships with the students and seeing them excited to learn is the best part about the ESL program. In the future, I hope that all congregations from our church will serve together, as students are coming to learn English and receive salvation.
